Book Review – Sita’s Sister by Kavita Kane

25515592._SY475_Hi friends!! After an absence of maybe more than six months, here I am, with a book review. Last year, I challenged myself to read 22 books. I wasn’t confident that I would even read 15 books. However, I managed to read 32 books 😊 So, I wanted to kick start this year’s blogging with an awesome book review. I love reading mythological novels. I have read various books on Mahabharata and Ramayana. I love reading the different versions of the same, but I had never come across books by Kavita Kane till recently. When I was randomly looking out for some book at the library, I found Menaka’s Choice by Kavita Kane. The name itself fascinated me so much that I decided to give it a try. I will very soon give a review of that book as well. After having read it, I decided that I wanted to read all Kavita Kane’s books.

The title of her book is something which actually pulled me towards it. When it comes to mythology we always talk only about the main characters, we do not bother about the other characters. The idea of picking up one female character who is not the main character and pulling out her strengths and showing that she is no less compared to the main lead is something which did wonders on me. I’m sure everyone who has read her books would agree with me.

As we all are aware Sita’s sister Urmila was married to Ram’s brother Laxman. We’ve heard about her in like bits and pieces in Ramayana, but we have never learnt about her in detail. This book ‘Sita’s Sister’ brings out the story of Urmila fabulously. While we see Sita as a strong person who accompanies her husband to spend fourteen years in the forest, we do not talk much about Urmila. If Sita sacrificed for her husband, so did Urmila. She supported her husband’s decision of accompanying his brother and she stayed back at the palace to take care of his family. She made sure that the broken pieces of the family were again glued together.

We would’ve heard about Urmila’s sacrifice in Ramayana, but ‘Sita’s Sister’ gives you a new perspective of seeing Urmila. I enjoyed reading the book thoroughly. The way the story begins with the four sisters at their parents’ house slowly getting married into the same family and moving into the in laws’ house together and how they handle the conflicts and situations at the in laws’ place which sometimes shakes the base of their relationship is mind blowing. The way in which Urmila tries to drive sense when her sister Mandovi is supremely angry with her husband Bharat and the patience with which she handles the entire family in the absence of the princes especially when she herself is in grief mode as she is separated from her husband is supremely courageous. It makes you see Ramayana from her point of view as well.

I’m sure anyone who loves mythology would love this book. You should give it a try and I guarantee you that you will surely read all her books. I love the concept of choosing one female character who hasn’t got as much importance as the main character, but yet deserved is something which I really loved. So why waste time here waiting to see what else I’m trying to tell.

Please rush to your nearest library or bookstore and grab a copy of this now and give it a try.

Will see you guys soon with another blog post.

Till Then, Cheers!!!
